Camping With The Colts

EYE ON CAMP:

The tradition continued for the Colts Wednesday.

And it’s a tradition Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said he likes very much – for a variety of reasons.

The Colts on Wednesday held two practices, one at 8:30 a.m. and a second coming at 7:30 p.m. – the annual Night Party Practice, annually a huge night for attendance at the main field at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

“We do it for a couple of reasons,” Dungy said on the third day of the Colts’ 2007 Training Camp. “No. 1, it’s to spread things out and give our players a break from the heat and a little more rest from the day, which is good for us. No. 2, we do it to give our fans who work a chance to come out and see the team a couple of evenings.

“It’s always a great atmosphere. It’s a little different with the lights and a high-school type excitement, but the guys like it and the fans like it.”

The Wednesday night practice is part of Dungy’s plan to give players extra rest in the middle of the first week of camp. On Thursday, the Colts are only scheduled to practice once – a special-teams only practice at 3:30 p.m.

CAMP SKED:

The Colts will hold a special-teams practice Thursday at 3:30 p.m., with two practices – one at 8:30 a.m. and another at 3:30 p.m. scheduled Friday. All practices at Rose-Hulman are free and open to the public. Rose-Hulman charges a fee for parking.

WEATHER REPORT:

The temperatures in Terre Haute for Wednesday for Colts 2007 Training Camp reached 89 degrees, according to weather.com. The forecast for Thursday for a high of 90 degrees with zero percent chance of rain.

WHO’S COVERING THE COLTS:

Media in Terre Haute Monday covering the Colts included Dave Goldberg of the Associated Press and Paul Burmeister and Jamie Dukes of the NFL Network.

PLAY OF THE DAY:

Through the first three days of camp, Colts second-year running back Joseph Addai has been one of the more consistent standout players.

Addai, who led all NFL rookies in rushing last season, has had several long runs, and also has been effective as a pass receiver early in camp. On Wednesday, Addai turned in one of the morning practice’s highlight plays in a passing situation.

In Wednesday morning red-zone drills, Addai caught a 10-yard pass from Colts quarterback Peyton Manning on a back-shoulder pass in the corner of the end zone.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS:

--- Quarterback Peyton Manning scored on a quarterback draw in goal-line, 7-on-7 drills in the morning practice.

--- Cornerback Kelvin Hayden broke up a pass from Manning to reserve wide receiver Aaron Moorehead in the end zone in the morning practice.

--- Tight end Ben Utecht caught a touchdown pass from Manning on a slant pattern in 7-on-7 drills in the morning practice.

--- Tight end Dallas Clark caught a 15-yard pass near the sidelines in the morning practice.

--- Wide receivers Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison each continued to have solid early camps, catching short passes in the morning practice.

--- Harrison caught several passes in the night practice, with he and Manning teaming up several times over the middle and on the sidelines.

--- Linebacker Rocky Boiman had a hard hit on wide receiver John Standeford after a completion in the night practice.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“I’ve been kind of taking it easy on him (rookie wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez). He’s got a million things being thrown at him, so once he sort of gets comfortable, I’ll give him something (advice). I just feel like there’s no sense of me telling in him something when you’ve got (wide receivers coach) Clyde Christensen, then you’ve got (offensive coordinator) Tom Moore, then you’ve got (quarterback) Peyton (Manning). You feel like you’re in calculus class. Once he gets comfortable, then I’ll say, ‘Hey, look . . .’’’

--- Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne

DUNGY SAYS:

--- Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy
