Seven Vols scored in double figures as Tennessee opened its European tour with a 113-64 victory over BK Sadska Friday night in Podebrady, Czech Republic.
Associated Press SEC Player of the Year Chris Lofton led all scorers with 20 points while junior forward Ryan Childress had 16 points.
David Spicka’s 17 points led BK Sadska, a Division I Czech professional team that had players who were as old as 34 on it.
“It feels great to open with a win,” sophomore guard/forward Josh Tabb said following his 13-point effort. “We weren’t really nervous about tonight but didn’t know what to expect about playing European style basketball. We were able to work on a lot of things and really started to gel as a team.”
Coach Bruce Pearl was pleased with his team’s initial effort on the trip.
“I thought our effort was good,” Pearl said about the blow out. “Our weaknesses stayed the same though. We still have a lot of things to work on. We got contributions from a lot of different people tonight. I thought we played very unselfishly.”
The Vols got a boost by a large group of orange-clad fans who easily out-measured the number of boosters for the home-standing Bulldogs.
“That was nice for all of these fans to follow us all of the way to another country,” Tabb said. “That shows the kind of support that our fans give us. It was great to hear them sing Rocky Top at the end of the game. They gave us a lot of energy.”
Tennessee returns to the court at 5 p.m. (11 a.m. EST) Saturday when the Vols travel to Kolin, Czech Republic, to meet BK Kolin, a professional team that won the nation’s second division last season and is getting ready to move up to the top division of professional basketball this season.
