Jeff Roth Memorial Omnium

August 12, 2007

Maryville -- The Jeff Roth Memorial Omnium was held this weekend in Maryville in memory of the cyclist killed while riding on US 321 last August.

Created by the KnoxVelo Bike Club – a bicycling community of more than 150 members who promote cycling in the area – the race was founded to seek raise awareness of the “three foot rule” legislation in Tennessee, which states motorists must give at least three feet of clearance when passing a cyclist. Additionally, the event is a fundraiser for Roth’s wife and children.

“It’s an honor to be involved in the Jeff Roth Memorial Omnium,” said KnoxVelo President Jim Wachter. “Jeff’s wife recently pushed for the ‘three foot rule’ here in Tennessee to help ensure what happened to Jeff won’t happen to other cyclists.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2004, 725 cyclists were killed in traffic crashes, and more than 41,000 were injured.

Races throughout the weekend included a road race, time trial, criterium, and a kids’ race.

The KnoxVelo Bike Club started in 1996 with the goal of being an all-inclusive organization welcoming road, mountain, racing, and recreational cyclists. For more information, contact club President Jim Wachter at (865) 690-5112 or visit www.knoxvelo.org.
