Vols Battle Heat As CAL Preparations Hit Full Swing

The Tennessee football team took to the practice field Thursday with temperatures climbing into triple digits. Cal preparations began in earnest during the sweltering two-hour workout at Haslam Field.

With the Vols set to depart for Berkeley, Calif., in seven days, UT head coach Phillip Fulmer expects to see a completely disciplined mental approach from his squad in the coming week.

"I'm looking for the guys to show emotion and take care of business on the practice field," Fulmer said. "I saw very few mistakes today. We gave a preliminary scouting report on Cal and started real business on (the Golden Bears). It will be a great film to study."

A total of 14 starters return from last years 10-3 Cal team, which lead the Pac-10 in scoring with 32.8 points per game. Despite the loss of first round NFL draft pick Marshawn Lynch (TB), the Golden Bears offense is still potent, led by quarterback Nate Longshore and Heisman Trophy candidate DeSean Jackson at wideout.

The Tennessee secondary, led by senior preseason All-America Jonathan Hefney, faces a stiff test defending a veteran wide receiver corps, which last season averaged more than 250 yards per game and returns its top-three performers in terms of total yards, touchdowns and receptions.

The Big Orange lead the all-time series 2-1 after last season's 35-18 win at Neyland Stadium.
