(WVLT) - It was one of the hottest days of the year in Northeast Tennessee Friday, but the steamy temperatures had nothing on Kasey Kahne.
Engine number nine scorched the concrete twice in one day, qualifying in the pole position for Saturday's Sharpie 500 and taking the checkered flag in the Food City 250.
Juan Carlos Montoya qualified second for Saturday's race, with Jamie McMurray, David Ragan, and Dave Blaney rounding out the top five. Chase outsider Dale Earnhardt, Jr., qualified 17th, and points leader Jeff Gordon ran 18th.
In the Busch race, Kahne passed Ryan Newman with eight laps to go and held on for victory. Perhaps a bigger story, however, was NASCAR's penalization of Kyle Busch, which costs Busch his second position and was later deemed to be incorrect. Busch, who finished fourth, was penalized with 77 laps to go because NASCAR said he violated the pit-road commitment line. NASCAR later admitted he did not.
Jason Leffler took second place in the Food City 250, and David Reutimann finished third.
The Sharpie 500 revs up Saturday at 7pm.
