Berkeley, CA. (WVLT-TV), It's rated America's number one University by US. News and world report. The University of California is home to a diverse group of student's, students the players are urging to make alot of noise, just as Vol fans made it difficult for the Bears last September in Knoxville. Coach Fulmer told us Friday his guys must be "POISED FOR THE NOISE."
The game each year for Cal is the one which produced the program's biggest play. It's simply called "The Play", the kickoff return through the Stanford band for the winning touchdown. In recent years the Golden Bears have come to be known for much more. Under Jeff Tedford, the Bears have become a consistant winner. In the five years prior to his arrival, Cal went just 12-43, with no winning seasons and no Bowl appearances. In the five season's since, the Golden Bears have gone 43-20 with five consecutive seasons.
Here we are again, Tennessee vs. Cal, the SEC vs. the PAC-10, only this time the Bears will enjoy home field advantage or will they with some 20 thousand Vol fans expected to attend the game at California Memorial Stadium. Both teams have something to prove, for Cal it's that they're not as bad as they looked last season and for Tennessee it's the chip on their shoulder after being named underdogs to the Bears.
The Vols wanted to get acclamated to the surroundings as well the field at California Memorial stadium, where coach Fulmer had his troops down on the prescription turf, which s quite similar to UT's indoor practice facilty back home. During the practice we witnessed 4th year senior quarterback Erik Ainge taking snaps under center and even trowing the ball. The coach says his status is still a go for tonight, so is that of injured punter Britton Colquitt.
