Basketball teams stand with 11 year-old classmate battling cancer

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - It was just 2 weeks ago that Destiny Keathley was the queen of the ball. Now, the 11 year old is in a hospital bed, battling brain cancer. But, according to her principal, Michelle England, she doesn't fight alone.

"In mind, heart, prayers. Everything is right there with her. She is one loved little girl. Today there have been sad eyes. And sad tears. But she knows that we are there. They know that she is there. We have been in contact with the parents."

The North Cumberland Elementary basketball teams, where Destiny goes to school are dedicating their seasons to her.

"Tonight, all of our players are wearing gold shoe laces. The cheerleaders are wearing gold ribbons. She is definitely in the hearts of these girls and they want to dedicate this game and the rest of their season to this little girl," says England.

The school raised $1200 for Destiny and her family at their games on Thursday night.

That support spills out of the gym and into the hallways where the love for destiny is everywhere. England says there is good reason for that, "Destiny was the kind of child that was fun, bubbly, loving And you never heard a negative word out of her mouth."

The goal of life is simple, to love and to be loved. It is obvious that at the age of 11, Destiny Keathley has already mastered that.

On Friday afternoon, Destiny was taken off the ventilator. She is now responding to the doctors and her family with simple reactions, such as squeezing her loved ones hands.
