OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (UTLadyVols.com) – Lady Vol senior basketball player Angie Bjorklund was selected as one of 10 finalists on Wednesday for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in women’s hoops.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in November. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website (seniorCLASSaward.com) or on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through March 20. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the women’s winner at the NCAA Women’s Final Four® in Indianapolis.
Bjorklund is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and was the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s basketball in 2009-10. Additionally, the Spokane Valley, Wash., native was one of five members of the prestigious CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-America Basketball First Team in 2010 while also earning CoSIDA. ESPN All-District IV First Team honors. A psychology major, Bjorklund set the Lady Vol record for three-pointers made in a career earlier this season against Rutgers on Dec. 30. She is averaging 11.3 ppg and 3.1 rpg in the 2010-11 season for the No. 5/6-ranked Lady Vol hoops squad that has started the season with a 19-2 record.
Joining Bjorklund as a finalist for the award are: Army’s Erin Anthony, James Madison’s Dawn Evans, Xavier’s Amber Harris, Connecticut’s Maya Moor, Stanford’s Kayla Pederson, Depaul’s Sam Quigley, West Virginia’s Liz Repella, Oklahoma’s Danielle Robinson and Duke’s Jasmine Thomas.
