AUBURN, Ala. (release) -- Senior Kylie Bono scored off a free kick in the 60th minute to lift the Tennessee soccer team to a 1-0 road victory over defending SEC Tournament champ Auburn on Sunday at Auburn Soccer Complex.
Tennessee improved to 10-3-2 on the year and 5-2-1 in SEC play. Auburn fell to 8-7 and 4-4 in conference games. Including Friday’s 1-0 win at South Carolina, UT now has wins over the 2011 SEC regular season and tournament champions.
"Two wins on the weekend - it's a great weekend. Two shutouts on the weekend - it's a great weekend," Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky said. "Great goal by Bono. It was another second-half goal about 15 minutes in and then our kids just kind of bear down and get another shutout. Seven goals against in 15 games is big-time. Our team just continues to battle."
Taking the free kick a few yards from the front left corner of the box, Bono rocketed a shot that sunk below Auburn goalkeeper Amy Howard into the lower right center of the net. The score was Bono's fourth of the year and her third game-winner. The UT senior now has seven career game-winners.
The scoreless first half was very competitive as each team had four shots. Auburn had a 5-2 edge on corners, but much of the action was in the battles at midfield.
In the 19th minute, junior midfielder CC Cobb was injured near midfield, heading a goal kick from Julie Eckel. Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to the local hospital.
Tennessee came out with renewed tenacity in the second half. After her goal 15 minutes into the period, Bono fired another shot in the 72nd minute near the center of the net that was saved by Howard. In the 77th minute, senior Amy Harrison had a good shot from the top of the box that curved just left of the post.
"Losing CC Cobb hurt us a little bit, but other kids stepped up," Pensky said. "Alison Clarke stepped up. Susan Ferguson stepped up. So, another great team win and I'm very proud of our kids' resilience . I'm very prod of the three seniors who gave us 90 minutes - Ali Hall, Amy Harrison and Kylie Bono playing with a terrific desperation. That's what you need out of your leaders and that's what they're giving us."
The Lady Vols finished the game with a 12-10 shot advantage. Auburn had a 6-4 edge on corner kicks.
Iyana Moore led the team with four shots, including one on goal. Bono had three shots on goal. Eckel (10-3-2) had one save in the win and picked up the 15th shutout of her career.
Amy Howard (8-7) had five saves for Auburn.
The Lady Vols' next home game is Oct. 12 against Kentucky. Tickets for that game are just one dollar and the first 1,000 fans will receive free Lady Vol Soccer scarves
