Carson-Newman's Bell a winner off the field

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Carson-Newman senior defensive end Byron Bell continues to be a winner off the field as well as on. Bell, out of Knoxville West High School, recently was named to the 2011 AFCA Good Works Team.

The Good Works team is one of the most prestigious off-field awards given out and is limited to 22 players across every level of college football.

Carson-Newman head coach Ken Sparks said that Bell is a special person.

"In this life there are a few difference makers and guys that are over and beyond success. Byron Bell is one of them," Sparks said.

Bell keeps busy off the field with many service projects including tutoring other college students and volunteering to work with both underprivileged and special needs children.

Bell says he does this kind of work for one simple reason.

"If you want to reach your full potential, you must help others reach theirs as well. That's why I'm out doing everything that I can to help those around me reach their full potential so that I may reach mine as well."

His biggest and most life changing project may have been the missionary work he did in South Africa. "It taught me that even though we are different cultures, no matter what it may be, we face some of the same struggles," Bell said.

Bell says that he is a man of actions more so than words.

"You have to. I feel like you must lead by example first. So I always try to lead by actions. When times do arise that I must speak up, I will speak up."
