Clifton's rocket right arm getting national attention

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT-TV) -- Heritage High School pitcher Trevor Clifton says he didn't play with cars or trucks when he was a boy.

Baseballs were more his style.

And now it's baseball that has the junior as one of the more sought after prospects in the nation.

Clifton's fastball has topped at 94 miles per hour. It consistently reaches 89-91 mph.

ESPN ranks Clifton has the third best pitching prospect in the class of 2013.

"I just loving having the ball in my hand every play," Clifton told Local 8 Sports. "You just gotta know you're gonna win every time and throw a strike every time. You gotta stay humble and take it pitch by pitch."

The 6'4" junior has stayed humble.

When he brought in a box full of recruiting letters for this story, several of his teammates had no clue the he was receiving interest from colleges all across the nation.

"It's a lot of pressure on a kid, but I think he's handled it pretty good," Robbie Bennett, the Mountaineers' baseball coach, said.

"When he goes out, people know who he is. He's gonna get everybody's best when he throws against them," Bennett said.

Clifton says he has enjoyed the recruiting process, but is more focused on his time at Heritage. When the moment is right, he says, he will concentrate on what's next: college, junior college, or professional baseball.

"It's (the recruiting process) a big change in your life. I mean, it's just a confidence booster," Clifton said.

Among others, Clifton has offers from Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech.

If he had to list a number one school of interest at this point in time, Clifton said it would probably be Kentucky.

Clifton was also a member of the United States 16&Under Junior Olympic team. He traveled to Mexico last August where he was part of the gold medal winning squad.
