Connolly takes sixth in the 100m backstroke

OMAHA, Neb. (utladyvols.com) -- Tennessee’s Jenny Connolly finished sixth in the finals of the 100-meter backstroke Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Connolly touched the wall in a time of 1 minute, 0.83 seconds, at the CenturyLink Center in her final scheduled event of the Trials. She also placed 12th in the 100 butterfly on Monday.

Missy Franklin won the 100 backstroke in an American record time of 58.85. She will be joined on Team USA by Rachel Bootsma, who took second in 59.49.

After two busy opening days for Tennessee at the Trials, only two Lady Vols were in action Wednesday outside of time trials. Lindsay Gendron swam in the preliminaries of the 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 2:01.18.

Tennessee on Thursday: The Vols and Lady Vols will race again on Thursday with three preliminary races scheduled for the midday session.

The 200 butterfly is the only women’s preliminary on Thursday, and three Lady Vols are set to race: Kelsey Floyd, Kennedy Higdon and Brooke Watson. Floyd has already had a standout Trials. She finished fourth in the 100 butterfly, swimming progressively faster in the three rounds.

For the men, Samuel Rairden is set to race in the 100 freestyle, and former SEC champion Brad Craig will compete in the 200 breaststroke. Craig swam a career-best in the 100 breaststroke in Monday’s preliminaries, narrowly missing the semifinals.
