Countdown to Kickoff: Heritage

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- If Heritage's performance in Friday's Blount County Jamboree is any indication, the Mountaineers will be an improved football team.

Heritage had success against Maryville, but lost 14-12.

Heritage is coming off an 0-10 season, but second year head coach Tim Hammontree says he has seen an increased commitment from his players. Numbers are also up, as the Mountaineers' roster is bigger.

The 'Neers have played two preseason games leading up to the start of the season, beating both Walker Valley and Clinton. Hammontree said in both games his team was able to score some points, giving his squad some much needed confidence.

If Heritage is to win this year, look for them to do so by grinding it out on the ground.

"We're a wing-T football team. We'll probably eat up 7 or 8 minutes on the clock on a drive, and maybe end up kicking a field goal, but we're not gonna turn it back over to you," Hammontree said.

"We're not blessed with tons of talent that can run 4.4 and 4.5 40s. So we put together a power offense that we hope our kids can continue to build on."

Heritage opens up the season August 30 at South-Doyle.
