KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's a transitional period for the Karns Beavers.
When head coach Derek Witt resigned earlier this summer, defensive coordinator Travis Tipton was promoted to acting head coach.
Tipton will coach this season on an interim basis.
A rash of injuries hurt Karns' cause last year and the Beavers limped thru 2012 with a 1-9 record.
If the team is to improve on that number this fall, Tipton will rely on his defense to do so."
"They get after it on defense and it really sets the tone," Tipton said.
"Anytime we can win the coin flip we want them with the ball, so we can get the defense on the field first."
A new season always brings with it a new hope. Quarterback Blake Bowman is excited to get things kicked off.
"The feeling is pretty good," Bowman said. "Everyone is excited about the season. Knowing that it was 1-9 last year, everybody is gonna put it behind them and move on to this year."
Karns opens up the season August 23 at West.
