KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Powell Panthers are coming off a 14-1 season and a state runner up finish. But a lot has changed in a year. Not only are several top players gone, but so is the coach.
Derek Rang steps in to take over the program and he understands that expectations are high. "You know, right now the community expects a winner. We as a coaching staff expect to have a winner. The players expect to win. Definitely you can work hard and practice hard and hopefully the wins and losses take care of themselves throughout the season", says Rang.
Keep your eye on running back Monterio Washington. Big things are expected of him. Washington says that the coaching change does not greatly affect him or the team, "It's still the game of football regardless of who your coach is and he brings a lot of intensity to our practices and our workouts and everything."
Powell opens the season at home against Rhea County on August 17th.
