SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's a new era in more ways than one for The King's Academy.
Former Powell head coach Matt Lowe now leads the Lions' football program.
Furthermore, the Lions are now eligible for the postseason. Prior to 2013, TKA played its schedule, and regardless of record, that was it.
However, the Lions are now in the Division II-A classification (the same level Webb School plays at).
If TKA is to make the playoffs, it will have to improve on last year's 3-7 record.
That's where Lowe comes into play. His hiring gave the Lions' program instant credibility, and a much needed shot of adrenaline.
"Just everyday, he is bringing it. He's ready to go. He's more excited than all of us, especially at like 7 a.m. workouts," quarterback Adam Deatherage said.
"He's pumped up. He's ready to go, ready to get everyone lifting and stuff and we're still half asleep and he's like 'lets go, lets go.''
After resigning at Powell in 2011, Lowe didn't coach in 2012. In six seasons with the Panthers, he had incredible success, posting a 49-23 overall record. In 2011, Powell went 14-1 and finished as state runner-ups in Class 5A.
One of Lowe's biggest challenges will be raising the Lions' expectations.
"What I am trying to teach them right now is the process of winning," Lowe said.
"These guys have got to learn about the process of winning."
Knowing that the playoffs are now a possibility, Lowe believes working toward the goal of making the postseason will provide a needed spark inside the TKA program.
"They're inside of a district now. The goal of playing the regular season is to get to the playoffs. They are hungry to win. They've never had a lot of success. They've never experienced the attention that comes with having success. They're hungry."
The Lions return 6 starters on offense, and four on defense, from last year's team.
TKA opens up the season at home August 23 against Sunbright.
