Knoxville, Tenn--(WVLT) Former Vol, Ja’Wuan James, signed with the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.
The Dolphins selected James with the 19th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft this past May. The 6’6” 318 pounder is expected to start at right tackle for the Dolphins when they open their season against the New England Patriots on September 7.
The details of the contract have not been officially released but it is being reported that James’ contract is a four year deal worth 8.4 million dollars. James will also collect a 4.4 million dollar signing bonus. The contract also includes a 5th year team option.
The 22 year-old James was a four year starter for the Vols football team and set a school record starting 49 games on the offensive line. His 49 games played in the trenches ranks second only to Dallas Thomas’ 50 games played.
James collected several awards during his four years in Knoxville including being named to the 2013 Associated Press and College Sports Madness Second Team All-SEC teams. Following the conclusion of Tennessee’s season James was invited to the 2014 Senior Bowl. He was also named to the 2010 Coaches All-SEC Freshman Team.
Prior to his arrival at Tennessee in January, 2010, James was rated as the eighth best offensive tackle in high school football by Rivals.com He was also named to the Rivals.com All-America Team and selected to play in the Under Armour All-America Game as well as being named All-State by Georgia Sportswriters.
