East beats West 26-9 to win Toyota All-Star Classic

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Tennessee's East All-Stars beat the West All-Stars 26-9 Saturday afternoon on the campus of Carson-Newman College to win the 2010 Toyota East-West All-Star Classic.

Behind touchdown passes from Anderson County's Tanner Williams and CAK's Quinn Epperly, the East jumped out to a 17-0 lead and the West was never able to get closer than ten.

Turnovers did in the West squad, as the West committed six turnovers.

The stats were much closer than the score. Both teams had 342 passing yards, but both teams also struggled to run the football. The East ended up with zero yards on the ground, while the West had negative one.

Saturday's showdown was the fourth time the classic was played. With the East's win the series is now tied 2-2.

The way I read the article there were two separate MVP awards for offense and two for defense. On the offensive side Quinn Epperly received MVP honors from both the MyVLT and TACA. On the defensive side Evan Brown received MVP honors from MyVLT. Austin Tallent recieved MVP honors from the TACA. A great job by all of these young men.

Ok, for those interested in purchasing a DVD, email Mark Packer at mark.packer@wvlt-tv.com. Also, as you can see from the comments, there has been alot of question/debate/confusion, call it what you want, about the defensive MVP for the East squad. There were two MVPs. One handed out by the TV station (we did do the broadcast) and one handed out by the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association. Evan Brown from Heritage received the TV MVP, while Austin Tallent from Alcoa was honored by TACA as the defensive MVP. The news released that was sent out (the one used by the paper) had TACA's MVP listed. Unwarranted confusion I know.

I dont believe Tallant was the defensive player of the game. On the actual broadcast they interviewed Epperly and Brown after the game and I am pretty sure on the broadcast they named Brown the DPOG but I was wondering why the News Sentinel wrote the article about Tallant being DPOG. Not sure where that got started but it was Evan Brown, not Austin Tallant!

The Defensive MVP trophy is sitting on Austin Tallant's dresser! I know he was named the Defensive MVP because I was there. News Sentinel and Daily Times - both report Tallant as winner.
