Fans pack gym to watch Bobby Maze's celebrity game

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Bobby Maze had an idea. It turned out to be a slam dunk.

The BMaze Celebrity Basketball Game at Hardin Valley Academy didn't host just several NBA players and former Vols.

It hosted a sell-out crowd of 2,600 as well.

"Man, it's priceless," Maze said. "You know, to see all of these people come out here, all these kids and fans, to show some love and appreciation. I am just happy to be here."

Maze organized the event to honor of his cousin Jamar Board. Board was a street ball legend in the Washington D.C. area. He died in December of 2012 at the age of 28.

The game featured former Vol and Orlando Magic forward Tobias Harris.

Michael Beasley of the Phoenix Suns was there. So was Denver Nugget guard Ty Lawson and Nolan Smith of the Portland Trailblazers.

Oklahoma City superstar Kevin Durant was suppose to be in attendance, but he missed the game when a scheduling conflict with NIKE surfaced.

Chris Lofton was among the former Vols that played.

"It's great to be back in Knoxville. This is my second home. I love it here, and I am happy to be able to play basketball again in front of this Knoxville crowd," Lofton said.

Besides the game (the Blue beat the Red 143-138) there was a slam dunk contest and a three-point contest.

Harris won the shoot-out.

"Just to come out here and give the fans something to watch, and it's an exciting game we have here," Harris said. "Just for my support to be here I think is very important."

Lady Vols head coach Holly Warlick and former Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl served as celebrity coaches.

Pearl took a very simple philosophy is coaching the Blue team.

"You think I am actually going to coach these guys?" Pearl joked. "My job is to make sure that they all get equal minutes, and that Bobby passes the ball to Beasley, and we have a lot of fun."

A portion of the Saturday's proceeds went to benefit the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of East Tennessee.
