KODAK, Tenn. (smokiesbaseball.com) -- The Tennessee Smokies used a five-run second inning to leap past the Jackson Generals 5-2 on Saturday night at Smokies Park. The win, in front of 4,838, improves the Smokies' season record to 6-4. Jackson falls to 7-3.
Five Tennessee batters had extra-base hits in the Smokies' second inning. Rebel Ridling smashed a triple off the center field wall and would score on a Mike Burgess towering home to dead center. The Smokies wouldn’t let up on Jackson starter Yoervis Medina (0-1). Jim Adduci continued the barrage with a ground-rule double to right and came around to score on a Mike Brenly RBI double. Logan Watkins finished the onslaught with a mammoth two-run home run to right to give the Smokies a 5-0 lead.
Smokies starter Brooks Raley (1-0) was on top of his game Saturday. He game up single runs in the third and fifth innings. On the night the left-handed starter went seven innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out one.
Burgess’ big night ended going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, only triple away from hitting for the cycle.
The Smokies bullpen did the rest from there, Casey Weathers pitched a perfect eighth and Kevin Rhoderick slammed the door shut on Jackson with a one-two-three inning to pick up his second save of the season.
The Smokies will head to Huntsville, Ala. to take on the Huntsville Stars in a five-game set starting Sunday at 5:03 EST. Tennessee will return to Smokies Park on Friday, April 20 for a five-game set with the Chattanooga Lookouts.
