KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Future Stars of Tennessee are being coached by a pair of former NFL stars. Jamal Lewis and Joe Horn are working to prepare Team Tennessee for their game against Kentucky coming up on Saturday.
"I just really wanted to come back and I knew it was middle shcool kids. 8th graders. And I knew that was a good ripe age to get out here and share my experiences and everything I learned,' Jamal Lewis says.
Joe Horn agrees, "I have an opportunity to teach these kids some of the things that I have learned in my life and my career. So, I love the children. I love kids."
The weekend consists of 2 games, one with 7th graders, the other with 8th graders. The players come from across the state. They are large. They are fast. And they are talented. "They're working out more. They're training more. They're doing football year round. A lot of them. So they're progressing much, much better. So they're getting, bigger, faster, stronger," Lewis says.
It may be summer time and these kids may only be in Junior high, but the coaching is intense and the hitting is for real. "If they're going to be hitting and they're going to have helmets and shoulder pads on I want them to get the real deal of how hitting is supposed to be, because this is a tough sport," Horn says.
The games against Kentucky will take place, Saturday, June 21st at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Kentucky.
