Former Vols earn MLB honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Former Tennessee standouts R.A. Dickey and Chase Headley each added even more hardware to their respective mantles on Tuesday, claiming a total of three Major League Baseball Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Awards.

Already the National League Cy Young and Branch Rickey Award winner, Dickey won the vote for the 2012 Starting Pitcher of the Year with 20.3 percent of the vote and received 41.4 percent of the vote in winning 2012 Breakout Pitcher of the Year accolades.

On the offensive side, Headley earned 32.3 percent of the vote en route to being honored as the 2012 Breakout Hitter of the Year, which he will put alongside his first career Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards.

The GIBBY Awards are selected by a vote of fans, MLB alumni, front-office personnel and members of the media.

The first knuckleballer to ever win the Cy Young Award, Dickey finished the season with 20-6 record and 2.73 ERA, while leading the league in strikeouts (230), innings pitched (233.2), complete games (five), shutouts (three) and quality starts (27).

Headley, who also finished fifth in the NL MVP race, established himself as one of the top all-around players in the National League this season, finishing with a .286 batting average, 31 home runs and 115 RBIs, which led the Senior Circuit.
