KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release)- Former Tennessee baseball player and Knoxville News Sentinel sportswriter Nick Gates passed away on Monday morning in Knoxville.
Gates was a member of the 1969 and 1970 Tennessee baseball teams, playing alongside UT legends Sam Ewing, Phil Garner and Bobby Tucker for head coach Bill Wright.
He played in nine career games for the Volunteers, recording one hit in 13 at-bats, scoring a run and driving in another as an infielder from Huntsville, Ala.
Gates joined the News Sentinel in 1971 and spent the next 38 years covering professional baseball and hockey before retiring in 2010 due to health issues. He was a three-time winner of the Southern League Writer of the Year, last earning the honors in 2010.
