KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- The Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Fayetteville FireAntz 3-1 in front of a loyal crowd of 2,017.
The Knoxville Ice Bears have found success as they have jumped out to take an early for the third consecutive home game when captain David Segal wristed a top shelf goal at 3:08 of the first period off the first shot of the game. Jon Higgins and Brett Valliquette outworked a FireAntz defenseman in the corner to feed a pinpoint pass to Segal, who was settled off the back post to beat former Ice Bear and current Fayetteville goaltender Kyle Rank.
Segal put the FireAntz in a deeper hole at 17:30 of the opening period when he finished off the hard work in the slot of Higgins and Valliquette who were buzzing around the front of the net peppering Rank, when Segal puck up the loose puck and jammed into the back of the net. Knoxville ended the first period 2-0.
Fayetteville cut the lead in half when John Clewlow wristed a harmless shot that deflected oddly off Shawn Arvai’s stick. The puck fluttered up and over Peter Skoggard and into the back of the net. The Ice Bears regained their two goal lead at 10:26 of the second. Matt Pierce fed a cross ice pass to a streaking Tyler Fernandez. He carried the puck into the zone and hit a streaking Eric Satim, who tipped the puck past Rank for a 3-1 lead.
The FireAntz pressed to draw even in the third period out shooting the Ice Bears 10-5 but were unable to draw even to force overtime. The Ice Bears secure their 3-1 lead through the final 20 minutes of play for the victory.
