Ice Bears lose to Fayetteville again

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- The Knoxville Ice Bears were back in the Civic Coliseum tonight to face off with the Fayetteville FireAntz after a loss in Fayetteville last Tuesday. A crowd of 2,384 Knoxville hockey fans attended the $1,000 Thursday game. The Ice Bears were unable to recover from a shaky start and lost to the FireAntz 4-2. Despite the loss, Knoxville has clinched their playoff spot and currently retains the sixth seed.

Fayetteville received an early a power play 3:49 into the first period, but wasn’t able to find the back of the net. The Ice Bears saw their first power play opportunity 7 minutes later, but the score stayed locked at zero. Fayetteville’s Kyle McNeil notched the first goal with 1:53 left in the period. John Clewlow followed with a second goal for Fayetteville 58.8 seconds before the buzzer. The period ended with the FireAntz leading 2-0.

Knoxville found the back of the net off a breakaway 8:08 into the second. Captain David Segal shot past goaltender, Peter Skoggard, with assists from Francis Drolet and Mark Van Vliet. But FireAntz’ Corey Toy answered the Ice Bears goal and regained their two goal lead 3-1.

Just before the end of the second, Fayetteville received a bench minor penalty for delay of game. The penalty gave the Ice Bears a power play advantage to begin the final period.

The Ice Bears fired the puck past Skoggard with just 4 seconds remaining on the power play at the start of the third. Berkley Scott notched his eighth marker of the season on the power play goal to close Fayetteville’s lead to 3-2. Goaltender, Bryan Hince, and Mark Van Vliet were credited with assists.

Unfortunately for the Ice Bears, the FireAntz answered again with their final goal at 4:15. Following the goal, Segal squared off with Tommy Lange. Segal dropped Lange to the ice and both players were penalized 5 minutes for fighting.

The Ice Bears weren’t able to catch Fayetteville’s lead, and the FireAntz left with the victory 4-2. The Ice Bears have two home games remaining in the regular season. They will be back on home ice
Thursday, March 20, for “Skating Dead” night. Come dressed in your best zombie look. It’s a $1,000 Thursday, so you could be the lucky fan going home with cash. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
