Ice Bears skate to 4-1 win over Fayetteville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- The Knoxville Ice Bears hosted a rare Monday night SPHL game at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

Knoxville continued its hot play from Saturday night’s game. After scoring two third period goals against Columbus, the Ice Bears scored two first period goals en route to a 4-1 win over the Fayetteville Fireantz in front of 2,798 fans.

Knoxville goaltender Bryan Hince recorded his third win in five days recording 28 saves.

Knoxville started the scoring with five minutes left in the first. After a shot from Brett Valliquette hit off the crossbar, forward Ben Souders tapped the puck into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Three minutes later, two Fireantz penalties gave the Ice Bears a five-on-three advantage for 25 seconds. Francis Drolet scored off another rebound, this off a Mark Van Vilet shot to give Knoxville a 2-0 lead after one period of play.

In the second, the Ice Bears struck early. One second after coming off a power play, Ben Power fired a shot from the left face-off circle, beating Fireantz goalie Peter Skoggard to push the lead to 3-0.
Knoxville added an empty net goal late in the third on Cody Dion’s 11th of the season.

Ben Souders recorded a rare Gordy Howe hat trick: a goal, an assist and a fighting major.

Knoxville takes to the ice again Friday at 7:30 p.m. as it hosts the second ranked Pensacola Ice Flyers for Pucks and Paws sponsored by Pet Supplies Plus.

On Saturday, the Ice Bears will host the Pensacola Ice Flyers for Legends Night and the retirement of Kevin Swider’s jersey. The legends will also be playing in an exhibition game starting at 5 pm – doors for this game will open at 4:30 pm.
