KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/SUBMITTED) -- The Knoxville Ice Bears’ head coach Mike Craigen announced today that the team has traded forwards Brett Valliquette and Phil Bronner to the Mississippi RiverKings in exchange for forwards Tom Craig and Cory Fulton.
“This trade will not only send a clear message to our locker room that being a .500 hockey club may have been acceptable in other cities, but it’s not acceptable in Knoxville and I have to do what I believe will help us get better. Not only does it get the attention of my locker room, but it also addresses two areas where I felt we needed help. Size down the middle in Tom Craig and a consistent physical presence in Corey Fulton,” said head coach Mike Craigen.
Craig, 6’3”, 220 lbs forward from St. Louis, MO joined the Mississippi RiverKings on February 16, 2013 at the conclusion of his tenure at the University of Windsor (Canada), where he registered 8 points (4G 4A) in 12 games played. He secured a playoff roster spot for the 2013 playoff run where he registered 4 points (1G, 3A) in the three game series with the Louisiana IceGators. For the 2013-14 season, Craig has 4 points on the season (2G, 2A) in 18 games played.
Fulton, 6’2”, 200 lbs forward from Mississauga, ONT, CA has spent two seasons in the SPHL with the Huntsville Havoc and the RiverKings. Known for his physicality on the ice, he registered 275 minutes in penalties in 72 games played. Fulton has recorded 12 points (5G, 7A) over the two seasons.
“A good trade will benefit both parties involved – teams and players – and I believe this trade has done that. Mississippi is getting an absolute heart & soul warrior in Brett Valliquette along with potential-filled rookie in Phil Bronner,” added Craigen.
In addition to the trade, over the weekend the SPHL has announced schedule changes that affect the Knoxville Ice Bears travel schedule.
