Kentucky dumps pair of football assistants

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky coach Joker Phillips is shaking up his staff.

The school announced Tuesday it has released running backs coach Larry Brinson and Chris Thurmond effective immediately.

Brinson spent the last four seasons with the Wildcats, helping the program produce 1,000-yard rusher Rafael Little and second-team All-SEC selection Derrick Locke last season.

Thurmond spent the last two years at Kentucky, coaching second-team All-American Trevard Lindley in 2008.

Spokesman Tony Neely said the search for their replacements will begin immediately, with one of the new hires serving as co-defensive coordinator with Steve Brown.

The Wildcats (6-6) will play Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 8.
