URBANA, Ill. (release) -- For the second straight season, a University of Tennessee women’s tennis duo has reached the final four of the NCAA Doubles Championship. This year the No. 4 seeded partnership of Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely has achieved the feat with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Arizona State.
After nearly a two and a half hour wait to get on the indoor courts thanks to rain in the area, Boren and Szekely took down the No. 31 team of Jacqueline Cako and Nicole Smith in straight sets to become one of just four teams left in the doubles championship.
“Kata and Brynn did a great job today and played with a lot of passion and confidence out there,” said co-head coach Mike Patrick. “We are looking forward to getting out there and playing one of the top seeds tomorrow in the semifinals.”
The win was the 41st of the year for the pair, putting them in a tie for third on the UT Single Season Doubles charts with Paula and Peta Kelly who achieved the feat in 1979.
The Lady Vols will return to action on Sunday when they face the No. 2 seed of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of Southern California.
Boren and Szekely are 2-0 on the season against teams ranked in the top five in the country.
