MONTGOMERY, Ala. (release) -- The Maryville College football team closed out a historic regular season with a 45-38 loss at the hands of Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.
A fourth quarter lead by MC with nine minutes remaining was equaled by a six-play, 77-yard scoring drive by the Hawks capped by a 44-yard TD pass from Taylor Hughes to Tyler Robinson.
The 38-38 score remained until the final minute of the game when Hughes finished off an 11-play, 44 yard drive with a five-yard scoring pass to Darius Dawsey.
Maryville falls to 8-2 on the season and 6-1 in the USA South. The loss gives the Scots a Co-Championship with Methodist University. Maryville will receive the USA South automatic bid to the NCAA tournament beginning next weekend.
The Scots amassed 450 total offensive yards on the afternoon. Evan Pittenger was 11-for-22 for 113 passing yards while also running 15 times for an additional 123 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. The sophomore signal caller had scoring dashes of three and 34 yards. Travis Felder, who eclipsed the MC single season rushing record today, scampered for three running touchdowns while accumulating 112 yards on 23 carries. Pittenger's favorite targets on the afternoon were tight end Jared Miller (4 catches/51 yards) and receiver Ed Johnson (4 catches/42 yards).
As the offense rolled, the Hawks nation leading offense answered each of the Scots' scores. MC's defense allowed 520 total offensive yards that included 190 via the air and 330 yards on the ground.
Huntingdon finishes their season 7-3 with the win.
Maryville will have an NCAA selection gathering at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday in the Lawson Auditorium on campus to see who the selection committee will pair them with in the NCAA regionals.
