GREENSBORO, N.C. (release) -- The Maryville College Fighting Scots evened their USA South league record with a key 41-6 road victory at Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots watched the Pride march down the field on their opening drive of the game, but MC's stingy defense forced a short field goal attempt. Greensboro's kicker pushed the ball wide left and the Scots would hold and prepare to take advantage in their first drive.
MC's offense, behind key runs by Evan Pittenger and Travis Felder, took the ball close to midfield. Junior running back Travis Felder promptly busted through the Pride line and dashed 51 yards for a touchdown. The score finished a ten play, 80 yard drive. MC's point after did not convert so Maryville took a brief 6-0 lead.
Greensboro took the ensuing kickoff and needed only one play to even the score. The Pride's Warren Scott, Jr. took an outside sweep 80 yards for their first score of the afternoon. The extra point failed and the game stood at 6-6.
As the first quarter ended, the game stood at 6-6 with Maryville driving. A host of penalties stalled the drive and MC would turn the ball over on downs. The Scots' defense simply dug in their heels the rest of the game.
A key stop by MC's Jonathan Clark forced Greensboro to punt to end their first drive of the second quarter. Maryville's next long drive was finished off with a strong run by Jordan Keller putting the ball of the end zone doorstep. Travis Felder finished off the drive with a five yard scoring plunge at the 9:27 mark. Dylan Miller's kick gave the Scots a 13-6 advantage. The six play, 35 yard score took only 1:36 off the clock.
Greensboro's final drive of the half was turned away by key plays by Maryville's Zach Brown and Ruben Rodgers. At the intermission, Maryville led 13-6.
Maryville took their opening drive of the third quarter to the house. In less than two minutes, MC's Evan Pittenger connected with Matt Likins for a 29 yard touchdown pass. The pass finished off a five yard, 70 play drive. Miller's kick made the score 20-6 with much of the second half yet to play.
Greensboro took advantage of a Maryville turnover and drove down to the Scots' 20 yard line. Key stops by Jonathan Clark and Dylan Wolfenberger made the Pride turn the ball over on downs. The trend continued as MC's second turnover gave Greensboro the ball deep in MC territory, but their defense rose to the occasion and turned the Pride away.
At the end of the third quarter, Maryville maintained a 14 point advantage but their offense was prepared to turn on the scoring in their final stanza of action. After three quarters of play, Felder already carried the load for MC with 166 yards on the ground. There would be more to come.
A six yard scoring dash by Felder started MC's scoring in the fourth quarter. Miller's kick gave the Scots a 27-6 lead. The ten play, 74 yard drive took four minutes. Maryville's defense consistently gave their offense the ball and they answered in the final quarter.
A tough run by Chad Brooks, who proceeded to break numerous tackles, gave MC the ball on the Pride's four yard line. E.J. Heard-Hunt found the end zone from four yards out, finishing a six play 55-yard drive. Miller's conversion put MC up 34-6 with 6:29 remaining in the game.
On the ensuing Greensboro drive, Maryville's Andrew Jenkins picked off a pass to put the Scots in scoring position once again. Quarterback Eric Sisson dashed to the corner of the end zone from 16 yards out to cap a six play scoring drive. Maryville would roll on to victory by the score of 41-6.
