Maryville College wins opener over Berry, 37-0

ROME, Ga. (release) -- The Maryville College Fighting Scots football racked up 516 total offensive yards while their defense held Berry College to only 57 yards rushing for a 37-0 victory in Rome, Georgia on Saturday evening.

In front of a capacity crowd that witnesses the inaugural collegiate football game of the Vikings, MC's Travis Felder rushed 16 times for 95 yards and three touchdowns to help secure the victory.

On Maryville's second possession, the Scots marched down the field 79 yards in 10 plays with Felder punching it in with a one yard dive. Lucas Underwood's kick was good and MC secured a 7-0 lead.

Maryville's defense forced back-to-back punts and the Scots took their third possession on the Vikings 35 yard line. A key third down pass reception from Evan Pittenger to Chad Brooks kept MC's drive alive. The 10-play, 65 yard scoring drive was capped at the beginning of the second quarter when Pittenger connected with Blake Williams for a 12 yard scoring pass. Underwood's PAT made the score 14-0.

At the 7:32 mark before the half Maryville would embark on a three-minute drive for another sustained scoring drive. An eight play, 66 yard scoring drive put MC up 21-0 when Travis Felder broke through the end zone for a ten-yard touchdown. The conversion was good and Maryville would take a 21-0 lead into the lockerroom.

At the half, the Scots had accumulated 287 total yards on 47 offensive plays while limiting the Vikings to 24 total rushing yards.

On Maryville's first possession of the third quarter, a busted play resulted in a 50 yard pass completion from Pittenger to J.T. Ostrowski to set up MC's next scoring opportunity. A nine play, 78 yard scoring drive found paydirt when Felder dashed into the endzone from a yard out. The kick failed, but Maryville boasted a 27-0 advantage going into the final quarter.

The first play of the fourth quarter saw the Scots' Deshijon Whitlock scamper a pair of yards to finish off a seven play, 65 yard score. Underwood's kick made the score 34-0.

With strong running by Trenton Shuler, Maryville took advantage of their final drive with a 14 play, 62 yard score. Lucas Underwood connected on a 29 yard field goal to finish off the scoring giving Maryville the 37-0 win.

Maryville quarterback Evan Pittenger was 15 for 23 via the air for 212 yards passing. He connected with seven different receivers while also accumulating 49 yards on the ground on six runs. His favorite targets were Chad Brooks (4-49), Blake Williams (3-29), and Ed Johnson (3-49). Felder's 95 yards paced the hard running backfield. Trenton Shuler had eight attempts for 65 yards while Chad Brooks added 49 yards on 13 touches. Freshman Deshijon Whitlock tallied a score on six carries for 27 yards.

MC's defense finished allowing 57 rushing yards and only 164 passing yards. Dylan Wolfenbarger, Jonathan Clark, and Gabe Johnson each had six total stops. Kendyhl Rodgers, Ferguson Charles, and Jamie Owen each had five tackles.

Maryville (1-0) celebrates their first season opening victory since the 2007 season when they defeated LaGrange College. They will prepare for a trip to Emory, Virginia next Saturday to challenge the Wasps of Emory & Henry College. E&H defeated USA South foe Ferrum College by the score of 49-13 earlier today.
