DANVILLE, Va. (SUBMITTED) -- Maryville College stopped several Averett drives in the fourth quarter as the Scots upended the Cougars 21-14 on Saturday at the Cougar Den.
Averett (4-2, 2-1 USA South) had three drives in the fourth quarter that ended with Maryville ( 2-4, 1-2 USA South) halting the Cougars on fourth down — two times deep in Maryville territory. Averett's defense was equally as tough, forcing the Scots to punt with 44 seconds to play. The Cougars had one last shot to pull even, but they ran out of time.
The Cougars couldn't overcome a 21-7 deficit in the third quarter. Blake Williams' 4-yard pass from Dustin Williams gave Maryville a two-touchdown lead with 2:58 left in the third.
Averett responded with a four-play, 53-yard scoring drive that took just over a minute. Freshman Kirkland Brown found senior Jeremy Dixon, who fought his way in from 22 yards out to close the gap to 21-14 with 1:46 left in the third quarter. Dixon finished with 10 catches for 106 yards.
The Cougars took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by senior James Wilson, but it was the only lead they enjoyed all afternoon. Dustin Williams found Devin Brunsvold for a 1-yard pass to knot the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. Maryville then took a 14-7 lead on another Williams touchdown pass, this time to Wesley Idlette for 20 yards.
Williams completed 21 of 32 passes for 208 yards to lead the Maryville offense.
In the seven games between the two teams, this was the fifth time that the outcome had been decided by a touchdown or less. Saturday's victory was only the second win by Maryville in the series.
