KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- After leading No. 3/3 Tennessee in scoring twice in seven days, Ariel Massengale was named the SEC Player of the Week on Monday.
Massengale, a 5-foot-7 junior from Bolingbrook, Ill., helped the Lady Vols go 3-0 on the week and rise to No. 3/3 in the national rankings. Her efforts were rewarded with her first-ever SEC Player of the Week honor. Massengale had twice been named SEC Freshman of the Week in 2011-12.
The UT point guard averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals per contest for the Lady Vols last week. They upped their record to 4-0 on the season with victories over No. 12/11 North Carolina as well as Chattanooga and Georgia Tech, teams that were receiving votes in the polls. Massengale shot .563 percent from the three-point line (9-16), .448 from the field (13-29) and .769 from the charity stripe (10-13).
Against UNC, Massengale scorched the nets with a career-high 20 points, draining five of nine three-pointers to spur the Lady Vols to a key road victory. The Big Orange floor general also contributed seven assists, six rebounds and three steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Massengale also led Tennessee in scoring with 16 points to go with five assists, two rebounds and a steal vs. Chattanooga. She closed out the week with nine points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals vs. Georgia Tech.
For the season, Massengale paces Tennessee with 14.3 points per game and averages of 5.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 steals.
Next up for this week’s SEC honoree and her teammates is a 2 p.m. non-conference tilt on Nov. 24 vs. Oakland. The game will not be televised, but it will be streamed live on UTSports.com.
