HICKORY, N.C. (Lenoir-Rhyne athletics) -- The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team (2-1, 1-0) defeated No. 17 Carson-Newman College (2-1, 0-1), 20-7, in its home and South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday night in front of 7,131 fans at Moretz Stadium.
Senior quarterback Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) and senior running back Jasper Thomas (High Point, N.C.) each scored on the ground for the Bears, who defeated the Eagles at home for the first time since 1978.
L-R limited Carson-Newman to just 247 yards of total offense and held the Eagles without a point after surrendering a touchdown on the game's second play from scrimmage.
Carson-Newman entered the game averaging 50.5 points and 443.5 yards of offense per outing.
The Eagles struck first when quarterback Johnny Foster (Roebuck, S.C.) hit wide receiver Jason Brown (Plant City, Fla.) for a 66-yard touchdown on the game's opening drive just 55 seconds into the contest.
L-R responded with back-to-back scoring drives to take the lead for good.
Herron ran it in from 20 yards out on the Bears' second possession of the contest for a 10-7 lead with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter which capped off an eight-play, 80-yard drive.
Senior placekicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.) hit a 38-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining before halftime, his second of the night, to give L-R a 13-7 advantage entering intermission.
L-R then took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove it 67 yards on six plays before Thomas finished off the scoring on the night with a 17-yard touchdown run.
Herron and sophomore running back Corron Boston (Durham, N.C.) finished with 73 and 71 yards rushing, respectively, to lead a 281-yard attack on the ground for L-R while sophomore defensive back Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.) spearheaded the Bears' defense with 10 tackles.
Foster passed for 126 yards while linebacker Larry Lumpkin (Grand Bay, Ala.) led all tacklers with 19 for Carson-Newman despite the loss.
