Late free throw lifts Oak Ridge into state title game

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Oak Ridge is headed back to the state title game for the first time since 1963.

The Wildcats (32-7) beat Arlington 57-56 in the semifinals of the Class AAA boys' state tournament.

Oak Ridge's Kevin Steen hit a free throw with 6 seconds left to break a 56-56 tie. Arlington then missed a shot in the paint at the buzzer, sending the Wildcats into a celebration.

Oak Ridge held a 7 point lead at the half, but Arlington (29-5) outscored the Cats 23-12 in the third quarter to take a 48-44 lead heading into the fourth.

But Oak Ridge surged ahead, winning the final quarter 13-8 to account for the final margin.

Isaac Merian paced the Wildcats with 21 points. He also had 3 blocks. Geevantay Gee added 15.

Oak Ridge faces Blackman Saturday at 3:00 pm EST. MyVLT will televise the game.
