Oklahoma suspends freshman RB Joe Mixon for 2014 season

Norman, OK.--(CBSSports.com) Oklahoma has decided to suspend freshman running back Joe Mixon for the entire 2014 season after an offseason incident resulted in assault allegations and one misdemeanor charge for the former 5-star prospect.

According to a statement released by the school, university president David Boren "accepted the recommendation" of athletic director Joe Castiglione and coach Bob Stoops to remove Mixon from the roster and exclude him from all team activities for the entire season.

"As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way," Castiglione and Stoops said in a joint statement. "As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student athletes, coaches and staff."

"With appropriate conditions," Mixon will be allowed to continue as an OU student and be eligible for financial aid.

On Friday, Mixon was charged with one misdemeanor count of an act resulting in gross injury for his role in an altercation with another OU student in July. According to the affidavit of probable cause, the freshman running back and Amelia Rae Molitor, 20, were engaged in a verbal and physical altercation at Pickelman's Gourmet Cafe in Norman.

Mixon pleaded not guilty to the charge on Monday and is expected back in court on Sept. 23.

Mixon did not report to camp with the rest of the Sooners due to an ongoing investigation regarding the incident. Mixon was set to compete for snaps in a talented backfield with Keith Ford and Alex Ross.
