Pensacola slips past Ice Bears, 2-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- Knoxville hosted the Pensacola Ice Flyers in the Civic Coliseum tonight in front of a sold out crowd of 5,170 fans for the fan favorite, Wiener Dog Race night. The teams played a rematch tonight after the Ice Flyers victory in overtime last night in Pensacola. The Ice Bears played a good game against the number 1 ranked team in the SPHL, but in the third period the Ice Flyers took the win, 2-1.

The Ice Bears skated their first power play opportunity 12:06 into the first period. Knoxville’s Corey Fulton and Pensacola’s Brett Lutes and Ross MacKinnon were all given 2 minutes for roughing, leaving the Ice Bears skating 5-on-4. They didn’t hit the net on the power play, but Ben Power put Knoxville at a 1-0 lead at 17:22. Francis Drolet and Bryan Hince were credited with the assist.

The second period started with the Ice Bears still in the lead. David Segal was penalized 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct at 6:51, and the Ice Flyers skated a power play. Knoxville killed the penalty and held their lead. Segal returned to the box at 8:58 after dropping his gloves with Pensacola’s Joe Bueltel.

Pensacola tied the game with 7:36 left in the second period. Joshua Turnball shot the puck over Knoxville’s Bryan Hince, and the teams entered the third period tied at 1.

Just 26 seconds into the third, Knoxville was on the power play after Ice Flyer’s MacKinnon was penalized for holding. At 1:11 Turnball was boxed for cross checking, and the Ice Bear skated a 5-on-3 advantage. The Ice Bears couldn’t break the tie, and the teams continued to battle for the win.

The Ice Flyers solidified their win with 9:03 left in the game. Dunbar took the shot. Hince went for the block, but the puck made it in to earn Pensacola their 2-1 lead. The Ice Bears pulled Hince for the last 1:29 of the game, but Pensacola leaves Knoxville with the win.

Join the Ice Bears next Saturday, Feb. 15, as they return to home ice for Pink and Preds Night! The players will skate in special “Pink in the Rink” jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game, and we will be joined by members of the Predator’s organization including Nash, the Predators’ mascot. The Ice Bears will host the Mississippi Surge for the first time with season. Puck drops at 7:30.
