Knoxville, Tenn--(UT Sports) Tennessee senior Ellen Renfroe has been named the Capital One Academic All-American® of the Year for Division I softball and senior Madison Shipman has been named a to the Capital One Academic All-America® First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Renfroe joins Raven Chavanne and Lindsay Schutzler as the only Lady Vols to earn Academic All-American of the Year honors. Chavanne was the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. Schutzler was the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American of the Year in 2006 and 2007.
Renfroe is a psychology major and entered the spring with a 3.75 GPA. She finished the semester with a 3.78 GPA. Renfroe is a three-time Academic All-American® after earning second team honors in 2012 and 2013.
Renfroe and Shipman have helped lead No. 9 Tennessee to a 45-10 record and a NCAA regional championship this year. No. 10 national seed Tennessee will face No. 7 Oklahoma from May 23-24 in the Norman Super Regional.
Renfroe has compiled a 29-6 record in 2014 with a 1.93 ERA, 11 shutouts, 29 complete games, 235 strikeouts and four saves in 221.0 innings. She has also limited the opposition to a .194 batting average. She was named a Top 25 finalist for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year for a third straight year. UT faces the University of Oklahoma in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend.
Renfroe recently went over 100 victories for her career and is just five strikeouts away from 1,000 for her career. She is 101-23 in her four seasons at Tennessee with a 1.62 ERA and 12 saves. She has struck out 995 batters in 853.2 innings. She has also tossed a pair of no-hitters and 40 shutouts. This season, Renfroe was named the 2014 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and has earned Third Team NFCA All-Southeast and Second Team All-SEC honors. On April 1, she was the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week. In 2013, Renfroe earned Second Team NFCA All-Southeast Region and Women's College World Series All-Tournament Team honors in 2013. She was a Louisville Slugger/NFCA First Team All-American and First Team All-Southeast Region choice in 2012. She was also first team all-region and third team All-American in 2011. In addition, she was a member of the 2012 U.S. Elite team and has been invited to the 2014 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp.
Shipman is a two-time Capital One Academic All-American ® as she previously earned second team honors in 2013. Shipman is an anthropology major and entered the semester with a 3.49 GPA. She finished the spring with a 3.52 cumulative GPA. She features a slash line of .431/.563/.863 for the season and is ranked fifth in the nation with a .563 on-base percentage and seventh with a .863 on-base mark and her 18 home runs on the season are a career high and rank 15th in the nation. The Valencia, Calif., native is also a 2014 All-NFCA Southeast Region selection, the 2014 SEC Player of the Year, a First Team All-SEC selection, an SEC All-Defensive Team pick, a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, a Top 10 Finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year award.
Shipman stands among the top five in school history in home runs (44, third), doubles (54, third), RBIs (207, fourth), walks (104, fourth), total bases (442, third), slugging percentage (.615, fifth) and double plays (28, third). She was a NFCA second team All-American in 2012 and first team selection in 2013. Shipman was also taken by the USSSA Pride with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 National Pro Fastpitch Draft. Shipman has also been invited to the 2014 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp.
Renfroe and Shipman are two of eight players on the Capital One Academic All-America® first team that played in the NCAA Regionals last weekend and two of five in NCAA Super Regionals this weekend.
