Kodak Tenn.--(WVLT/Submitted) The Southern League announced Monday that Tennessee Smokies right-hander Dae-Eun Rhee has been named the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the time period between June 23-29. Rhee becomes the fourth Smokies player this season to receive a weekly honor from the circuit after alum Kris Bryant, outfielder Rubi Silva and right-handed starter Corey Black, and also marks the fourth consecutive week the club has been represented with the league’s Hitter of the Week or Pitcher of the Week award.
In two starts in that time frame, the 25-year-old Rhee posted a 2-0 record and 1.42 ERA (2 ER in 12.2 IP), adding 13 strikeouts while only walking three. Included in that span was a solid seven-inning victory over the Montgomery Biscuits last night, when the righty fanned a team season-high ten batters while yielding a lone earned run.
The South Korea native overall this season has recorded a 5-3 clip and 3.10 ERA (34 ER in 98.2 IP) in 17 appearances (15 starts), in addition to a 1.24 WHIP and .243 batting average against. Rhee ranks second on the team in victories and first among starting pitchers, and ranks second in the circuit in innings pitched. Rhee enjoyed his best month of 2014 in June, compiling a 3-1 record and 2.63 ERA (11 ER in 37.2 IP) in six starts this past month after accumulating a 2-2 mark and 5.05 ERA (23 ER in 41.0 IP) in his first 11 outings (nine starts) of the season.
Rhee is the fourth Smokies player to receive a weekly honor from the Southern League this season, after outfielder Rubi Silva was named Hitter of the Week for the span between June 16-22, former infielder Kris Bryant was recognized three separate weeks (May 5-12, May 26-June 2 and June 2-9) and right-handed starter Corey Black as well for his efforts between April 21-28. It also marks the fourth straight week a Tennessee player has been tabbed a Hitter or Pitcher of the Week by the circuit after Silva won last week and Bryant was honored the previous two time periods.
The Smokies are scheduled to face off against the Montgomery Biscuits this evening at 7:15 p.m. ET at Smokies Stadium for the second game of their five-game series. Tennessee is expected to give the ball to RHP Matt Loosen (4-2, 4.73), while Montgomery is slated to send LHP LHP Grayson Garvin (0-3, 3.65) to the mound.
Tickets for that game and all remaining 2014 Smokies home games are still available and can be purchased online at www.smokiesbaseball.com, or by calling the Smokies Ticket Office at (865) 286-2300.
