SEC coaches pick Lady Vols to place fifth

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UT Release) -- The Southeastern Conference released its 2012-13 Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll Tuesday, and the Tennessee Lady Volunteers have been predicted to finish fifth in the 16-team league by SEC coaches. UT was picked to place fourth this season by the media on Oct. 23.

As was the case in the media poll, the coaches chose Kentucky (167 points) to repeat as league champion, followed by Georgia with 149 points. Texas A&M (145) and Vanderbilt (143) filled the third and fourth positions, trailed by Tennessee in fifth (117). South Carolina (102) and LSU (96) rounded out the top seven.

The bottom half of the SEC includes Florida (92), Arkansas (72), Auburn (57), Mississippi State (51), Alabama and Missouri (33), and Ole Miss (17).

After Meighan Simmons was the only Lady Vol to receive preseason All-SEC honors (second team) from the media two weeks ago, the coaches selected the junior guard from Cibolo, Texas, to the eight-member first team. Sophomore point guard Ariel Massengale, who led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio last season at 2.1, grabbed second-team accolades. The Bolingbrook, Ill. native posted a UT freshman-record 162 assists a year ago to rank second in the conference.

Tennessee, which stands No. 20 in the preseason poll by AP and No 16 by USA Today/ESPN, opens its 2012-13 campaign on the road, facing Chattanooga at 7 p.m. on Friday and #22/20 Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
