Smokies take both games of a twin-bill Wednesday night

JACKSON, Tenn. (WVLT/SUBMITTED) -- The Tennessee Smokies swept a doubleheader against the Jackson Generals Wednesday night winning game one 7-2 and game two 5-2. The Smokies (12-8, 46-43) are now 11-3 against the Generals (10-10, 39-47) this season.

In a game being resumed from June 28, the Smokies extended a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI single from Christian Villanueva and a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Mota making the Tennessee advantage 4-1.

The Generals cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single by Jack Marder.

The Smokies added to their lead in the next half inning. John Andreoli doubled to lead off the frame and would come in to score on a two-base hit from Arismendy Alcantara giving Tennessee a 5-2 edge. Alcantara came in to score on the next pitch when Rubi Silva singled to extend the lead to 6-2. An RBI double from Justin Bour put Tennessee in front 7-2.

P.J. Francescon (1-0) earned his first Double-A victory hurling 3 scoreless innings giving up just one hit. Carlos Gutierrez, called up from Daytona Wednesday afternoon, worked two innings to notch the save.

The first pitch Eric Jokisch tossed in the second game was deposited into the left field seats by Chris Taylor getting Jackson on the board first.

Silva quickly equalized in the top of the second with a two-out solo blast, the outfielder’s 12th round-tripper of the season tying the game at one.

For the second consecutive inning, Jokisch saw a hitter smack the first offering over an outfielder’s head. This time the ball stayed in the park allowing Ji-Man Choi to go to third base. The next batter was Marder who drove Choi home to put the Generals in front 2-1.

The Smokies took the lead in the 5th inning. After Andreoli scored on a wild pitch, Alcantara clubbed his first home run as a right-handed batter and 13th of the year to put Tennessee on top 5-2.

Jokisch (8-7) went 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits while recording five strikeouts. Kevin Rhoderick earned his third save of the year working 1.1 flawless innings with two strikeouts.

Right-hander Alberto Cabrera (8-3, 3.32) will climb the hill for the Smokies Thursday night to oppose Generals’ left-hander Roenis Elias (5-7, 2.77). First pitch from The Ballpark at Jackson is scheduled for 8:05 p.m.
