JACKSON, Tenn. (team release) -- A pinch-hit, bases clearing double by Ty Wright pushed the Smokies ahead for good, and Tennessee closed out an eleven inning, 7-4 victory over the Generals on Saturday night at Pringles Park. With the win, the Smokies sweep the five game series and improve to 32-23 in the second half and 75-50 overall.
The Smokies came out swinging in the top of the second inning on RHP Yoervis Medina. With one out, Rebel Ridling hit a solo home run to left field to put the Smokies in front 1-0. The next hitter, Steve Clevenger, singled into right field to set up Junior Lake, who belted a two-run homer to left field to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead. Jackson climbed right back in the bottom of the second off RHP Larry Suarez, as Fernando Martinez singled up the middle and was later driven in on an RBI single from Johermyn Chavez to cut the Smokies lead to 3-1. Chavez would score on another RBI single off the bat of Jesus Sucre to make it a 3-2 Tennessee lead after two innings.
The Generals took a brief 4-3 lead in the sixth inning, as Chavez scored on an RBI single from Jake Schaffer. However, in the top of the seventh, Ridling led off the frame with his second home run of the night to tie the game back up at 4-4. Tennessee had a chance to go ahead in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Steve Penney struck out Nelson Perez to end the threat.
After the Smokies bullpen shut down the Generals in the ninth and tenth innings in order, the Smokies came out swinging in the eleventh off Edward Paredes (1-1). After giving up two straight singles to Blake Lalli and Clevenger, Paredes walked Lake to load the bases. Ty Wright was summoned off the bench to pinch hit and unloaded on a bases-clearing double to left field, putting the Smokies in front, 7-4. After pitching the tenth for the Smokies, Oswaldo Martinez (4-0) shut down Jackson in the bottom of the eleventh to secure the win and the series sweep.
The Smokies return home to Smokies Park for a series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Sunday at 5:00 PM. LHP Brooks Raley (7-9, 4.17) goes to the hill for the Smokies, while the Lookouts turn to RHP Stephen Fife (2-0, 4.70).
