KODAK, Tenn. (smokiesbaseball.com) -- For the second straight night, the Tennessee Smokies put on a hitting display at Smokies Park defeating the Montgomery Biscuits 11-2 on Thursday night. Rebel Ridling blasted a grand slam as part of a six-run offensive outburst in the sixth inning, and the Smokies racked up 15 hits on the night.
The Smokies offense jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on doubles from Ryan Flaherty and Matt Spencer. Both starters Rafael Dolis and Chris Archer then settled in, working scoreless innings in the second and third.
The lead grew to 2-0 when the Smokies manufactured a run in the fourth. Josh Vitters walked, and after a Steve Clevenger bunt and a wild pitch advanced Vitters to third, Jim Adduci then drove in the run on a groundout to Biscuits shortstop Tim Beckham.
Montgomery cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth when John Shelby tripled and later scored on a Jake Jeffries groundout. The Smokies took advantage of erratic pitching in the bottom half of the inning, as Flaherty took third base and home on wild pitches to extend the Smokies lead, 3-1.
The game was then put out of reach in the sixth. Marwin Gonzalez drove in Adduci for his fourth RBI of the series, and D.J. LeMahieu followed with a single to score Blake Lalli. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ridling cleared the bases to make it 9-1. The Smokies tacked on another in the seventh when LeMahieu brought in Clevenger on a base hit.
Montgomery added one run in the top of the eighth off of Ty’Relle Harris, who was making his first appearance of the season. The Smokies quickly responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Vitters doubled home Ridling.
Dolis (1-0) received the win going six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five. Smokies relievers, Ryan Buchter and Harris, held the Biscuits to only two hits and one unearned run over three innings of work.
The series will resume Friday night, as Alberto Cabrera (0-0, 6.75) takes the mound for the Smokies against Joe Cruz (0-1, 6.75) of the Biscuits. First pitch is slated for 7:15 P.M. For tickets or more information, visit www.smokiesbaseball.com, or call (865) 286-2300.
