Smokies top Chattanooga, take 2-0 series lead

KODAK, Tenn. (smokiesbaseball.com) -- The Tennessee Smokies used a big-scoring inning, and a solid performance by the bullpen to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts in Game 2 of the Southern League North Division Series Friday night. The Smokies scored six times in the bottom of the second inning on their way to a 10-4 win, and bringing themselves only one more win from the Southern League Championship Series.

For the second consecutive night, Chattanooga jumped out to a big lead in the early innings. After scoring one run in the first, Tennessee starter Ryan Searle gave up back-to-back home runs giving the Lookouts the early 4-0 lead.

The Smokies wasted no time in answering, retaking the lead with an offensive outburst in the bottom half. Rebel Ridling went deep for a solo shot to lead off the inning. Back-to-back singles by Steve Clevenger and Junior Lake, followed by Nate Samson reaching on an error loaded the bases for Tennessee. A walk to Nelson Perez brought home Clevenger and a balk by Lookouts starter Chris Withrow brought home Lake.

Jim Adduci walked to load the bases again, and two batters later, Blake Lalli ripped a two-out double down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Smokies a 6-4 advantage.

In the fifth, Jae-Hoon Ha doubled to start things off and later came around to score on a Josh Vitters single. Two innings later, the lead grew to 9-4 as Steve Clevenger brought in two runs with a single to right.

Junior Lake reached on a hit by pitch in the eighth, and after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on an Adduci sac fly to make it 10-4.

The Smokies’ bullpen, Oswaldo Martinez, Kevin Rhoderick, Daniel Berlind and Marcus Haley, was outstanding once again, keeping the Lookouts off the board over the final seven frames and combining to allow only two hits. Martinez (1-0) picked up the win after striking out five over three innings of work. Withrow (0-1) took the loss for Chattanooga, surrendering six runs (two earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings.

The two teams will now travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. and resume their best-of-5 series at AT&T Field Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. Trey McNutt wills start for Tennessee against Chattanooga’s Allen Webster. If necessary, Game 4 will be Sunday night at 7:15 p.m. and Game 5 will be Monday night at 7:15 p.m. Fans can listen to the games at www.smokiesbaseball.com or from the Smokies free iPhone or Android app.
