KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(WVLT)-- Home runs happen frequently at four ballparks in Maryville.. But the event is an even bigger hit for Blount County's economy.
The big pitch for the annual Smoky Mountain Softball Tournament means the whole community wins. Since 1969, this tournament lures the top softball teams in America, but it also brings with it plenty of tourism green for the three days the tournament is held.
Parks and Recreation head, Joe Huff, says it's a win for the County. "I think, you know we've done some informal studies over the years and we've come to the conclusion, its just under a million dollar economic benefit. when you look at hotels, motels, restaurants, shopping," Huff said.
Destini Coco traveled from Kentucky to watch her husband play. "We've been to Foothills Mall and brought quite a few things," Coco said. Add vendors and sponsors it could even be more.
B.D. Hitch is working on his 15th year here, a vendor for Crockett Beef Jersey, it's been anything but tough for him. The tournament now in it's 43rd year is already a home run with fans, it continues to be a winner with the community too.
