Stokes scores 10 points in NBA Summer League debut

ORLANDO, FL. (release) -- Former Tennessee basketball standout Jarnell Stokes made his NBA Summer League debut Saturday, totaling 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks as his Memphis Grizzlies squad defeated Oklahoma City 84-63 in Orlando, Fla.

The 35th overall pick in last month’s draft, Stokes is one of at least three former Vols who will be playing in this year’s NBA Summer League. Fellow 2014 draft pick Jordan McRae (Philadelphia 76ers) and Renaldo Woolridge (Los Angeles Lakers) begin summer league action next weekend in Las Vegas.

McRae was drafted 58th overall after an outstanding four-year career at Tennessee.

For the second straight year, Woolridge (2009-12) will play for the Lakers summer league squad. He played professionally for Bilbao Basket (Spain) and Metalac Valjevo (Serbia) this past season.

It is unclear whether former UT guard Scotty Hopson (2009-11) – who is under contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers – will be suiting up for the Cavs’ summer squad in Las Vegas. Hopson suited up for the Miami Heat summer league squad last summer and starred last season for the Turkish professional team Anadolu Efes before signing his first NBA contract with Cleveland in March.

After earning the start and playing nearly 20 minutes in Memphis’ summer-league opener Saturday, Stokes spoke favorably of the Grizzlies’ offensive system.

"Looking at our offense, I can see why the bigs thrive here," Stokes said. "I just have to learn to slow down, because like most rookies, I speed myself up out there sometimes. But it will come and I will get better."

The Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League began Saturday and runs through July 11 at the Orlando Magic’s practice court at the Amway Center. The 25-game, seven-day event features the Magic, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder and Philadelphia 76ers.

The longer Vegas-based Samsung NBA Summer League takes place July 11-21 at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion and will feature 67 games. Teams competing in Las Vegas include the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Hornets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trailblazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards and an NBA D-League Select team.

Several NBA Summer League games are being televised live on NBA TV.
