KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UT Release) -- The Tennessee women’s basketball program garnered additional postseason accolades on Thursday, as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association announced its 2013 college basketball awards.
UT head coach Holly Warlick was named the TSWA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, while Meighan Simmons was selected as the TSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. The winners were chosen in a vote by the association’s members.
Under Warlick, Tennessee finished 27-8, winning the SEC regular-season title. The Lady Vols were 14-2 in conference play and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight, where they lost to Louisville.
Along with being named the SEC Coach of the Year in 2013, Warlick, an assistant to legendary coach Pat Summitt for 27 seasons, received the Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year.
Warlick returned no starters from last year's SEC runner-up and NCAA Elite 8 squad and had three starters this season who missed a combined total of 46 games.
Simmons, a 5-9 guard from Cibolo, Texas (Steele H.S.), paced UT in scoring (16.8) and minutes played (31.7) and was second in steals (1.4) and third in assists (2.1). She shot 41.2% from the floor, 36.5% on threes and 85.1% from the charity stripe and scored in double figures in 31 of 35 contests. The junior scored at least 20 points on 10 occasions, including a career-best 33 vs. North Carolina and concluded her third season at UT with 1,487 points to stand 21st on UT’s all-time scoring list.
She was chosen SEC Player of the Year by the coaches and was a first-team all-league pick by both the coaches and AP. Simmons also was a third-team Associated Press and Full Court All-American and a WBCA Division I Coaches Honorable Mention All-America selection.
