Titans lose third straight, fall to Redskins 19-16 in OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Graham Gano kicked a 48-yard field goal with 8:17 left in overtime and the Washington Redskins beat the Tennessee Titans 19-16 on Sunday after knocking Vince Young out of the game with an injured thumb on his throwing hand.

Washington (5-5) snapped a two-game skid and bounced back from a 59-28 loss to Philadelphia on Monday night. The win came on a day when at least seven Redskins went to the sideline with injuries, including Clinton Portis with a re-injured groin.

Gano's winner was his fourth field goal of the game. He also missed two -- a 51-yarder to end the first half and a 47-yard attempt at the end of regulation that fell short.

With rookie Rusty Smith replacing Young, the Titans (5-5) lost their third straight game. Smith drove Tennessee to a field goal and a 16-13 lead in the fourth quarter. But they had to punt after winning the toss in overtime and never got the ball back.

The Titans played so poorly the home fans seemed to spend more time booing than cheering.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee quarterback Vince Young had his No. 10 jersey and shoulder pads off. He walked toward the tunnel and suddenly tossed both up into the stands to some lucky fan.

A few minutes later, he walked past reporters already dressed, ignoring both questions and his old college teammate who tried to talk to him after a 19-16 overtime loss to Washington on Sunday.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher says Young may have a torn flexor tendon in his right thumb and may need season-ending surgery. Either way, Fisher says rookie Rusty Smith now is Tennessee's starter after the fifth-year veteran's latest meltdown.

Young got his thumb taped and retaped on the sideline, trying to return. He even tried a glove, but Fisher stuck with Smith.

Vince Young is not my idea of a winner, much less of a leader or a man. He carries a football like a loaf of bread. No junior high kid would be on a team carrying the ball like he does. Young is a real whimp IMHO as he gets tackled, looks fine, until he sees and interception or turnover he created, then he grabs a foot, finger, arm or whatever. He is no professional athlete. Bud Adams needs to dump him. And Fisher is responsible, too. We know what the Titans will do on offense 90% of the time. The other teams do, too. This team has talent. It lakes two leaders. A QB plus a real coach. Sadly, I do not think Bud Adams gives a hoot. So, we have an owner who will not dump vince, refuses to lambast Fisher, add VY, who is the whimp of the NFL.
