NEW ORLEANS (AP/WVLT) -- The Schimmel sisters certainly tried to summon one more magical performance for Louisville.
Against mighty Connecticut, Shoni and Jude Schimmel's "rez ball" repertoire of flashy passes and shots produced about as many misses and turnovers as points, and the Cardinals' stirring run of upsets came to an end. UConn's 93-60 win Tuesday was the largest margin ever in a women's NCAA title game,.
With their eighth national title -- tying Tennessee for most all time -- the Huskies prevented Louisville from joining UConn (2004) as the only schools to win national titles in both men's and women's basketball in the same season.
Sara Hammond was the only Louisville player to reach double figures with 15 points. Shoni Schmimel finished with 9.
Freshman Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and Connecticut won its eighth national championship with a record 93-60 rout of Louisville on Tuesday night.
The victory tied Geno Auriemma and the Huskies (35-4) with Pat Summitt and Tennessee for the most titles in women's basketball history. It was the most lopsided victory in a championship game.
It might not take long for Auriemma to pass Summitt the way Stewart and the rest of his Huskies played. His prized freshman was unstoppable, hitting shots from everywhere on the court.
The loss ended an unprecedented tournament run by Louisville (29-9) and left UConn as the only team to win both the men's and women's titles in the same season. The Cardinals' men's team beat Michigan on Monday night and coach Rick Pitino was in the crowd trying to spur on the women's program.
Afterwards, coach Pat Summitt acknowledged the win by saying, "Congratulations to Geno and the Huskies
on a remarkable season and 8th national title. Geno is a proven champion and leader in our game." Definitely classy on Pat's part. Auriemma would also acknowledge Summitt afterwards
as the greatest coach in the game's history.
